Lu Hopkins Designs

I am a final year Graphic Design student at Loughborough University. I am looking to challenge myself as a business and creative mind, and find experience in creative industries. This blog is to profile my own work, while also working as an archive of inspiring work I have collated.

Alice in Wonderland

This is the book cover I designed for the novel Alice in Wonderland. As there is a film coming out directed by Tim Burton, this would no doubt increase sales of the book, so I wanted to create a book that complimented the style of the film-the darker side to the novel.

The front cover represents both a rabbit hole and an eye. The "wonderland" is all in Alice's head so I wanted to illustrate how the rabbit hole is like falling into Alice's imagination and, as we all know, the eye is the window to the soul!

Community Project

This is a packaging project I did to improve relations in the small town of Loughborough. We have a large problem with Studentification in Loughborough causing tension and a serious "town vs. gown" issue.

Rather then being one community in the town, we are two very different communities that rub up against each other the wrong way. Many students have never lived away from home before so this project was about teaching them, and reinforcing it in the local community, to act more neighbourly.

This is a free Cup-cake mixing set that fits through your postbox which would be delivered to every household. You bake the cakes, which is interactive and fun, and give them to your neighbours. This gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself and get to know your neighbours better, which makes for a better, safer and friendlier community. Even if some do not bother doing it, the fact that the effort has been made to encourage a more neighbourly attitude is a step in the right direction.

This project was difficult as the packaging needed to be positive, but appeal to elderly couples, families, children and students all at once.

From the Heart

A simple logo/letterheard I was commissioned to design for a company that help people write their wedding speeches.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

This is the book cover I completed for the Penguin Competition Brief. I played solely on the imagery of the neck. Fragile, feminine, sexy and also where you spray perfume, the neck is the perfect imagery for this book as he strangles many of his victims as well. I used a hard fontface and capitals to spell out the title which slices across her neck subtly. The back cover is just a close up of her hair as throughout the bok, the author goes into great detail explaining how the murderer goes up and smells the women's hair.

I tried to keep it quite dark and eerie. I wanted the body to look quite dirty, almost like a corpse, as the novel is set in the 18th century in a fish market.

GDA

This evening I just brain-stormed some ideas for the Gloucestershire Deaf Association branding. This is the preliminary idea I think I am going to run with, and obviously now need to develop it and make it cleaner! The "G" needs to be more obviously the ear!
